Thermo Mechanically Treated Bars (TMT)

What is TMT bar?
Thermo Mechanically Treated bars is generally termed as TMT bars. These are reinforcement bars with ribs all-around the surface for better bonding between the bars & concrete, it is also known for their high strength. The main characteristic feature of these bars is a soft inner core wrapped in a hardened outer surface. They are manufactured in a way where the hot steel billets are passed through cold water, this hardens the outer surface, enhancing its tensile strength, while the core remains at a higher temperature and increases in ductility. This alteration in micro structure across the bar’s cross-section imparts enormous strength to it. As TMT bars don’t go through any twisting processes, hence their surface is free from cracks and other defects. In general, the TMT bars is denoted by the name of Fe500 or Fe415 and many more, this means that Fe stands for Iron & 500 stands for minimum yeild stress is 500 N/mm2.
Thermo Mechanically Treated bars is used for reinforcements in RCC work all over the globe due to the fact it is more corrosion resistance than HYSD or TOR rebars, which is also used as reinforcement.
Test to be carried out before using a consignment of Thermo Mechanically Treated bars:
Generally, the Thermo Mechanically Treated bar samples are taken from different bundles of the consignment so as to get more accurate average result of the consignment. These samples are sent to 3rd party laboratory for detailed analysis of mechanical & chemical properties of the said consignment.
Different client requires different kinds of test & the acceptance criteria values of these test results are sometimes modified based on the discussion of their structural consultant or by any consultancy firm.
The basic requirements for a Thermo Mechanically Treated bar to be accepted & used for work is clearly stated in IS code 1786:2008.
For Mechanical properties the code states the following:

Whereas, for Chemical properties the code states the following:
